America's First Gold Rush

A Golden Legacy Since 1828

Dahlonega was the site of America's first major gold rush in 1828β€”two full decades before California's famous rush of 1849. The discovery sparked the "Great Intrusion" into Cherokee lands and ultimately produced extraordinary mineral wealth. The U.S. Branch Mint operated here from 1838 to 1861, producing over $6 million in gold coins bearing the distinctive "D" mint mark, now among the most valuable American numismatic treasures.
